If you just heard him sing, you say his voice is a blend of Al Jarreau and Donnie Hathaway. But you’d have to see him play the guitar to realize there’s probably no one who compares.
This is my 3rd time seeing Raul Midon and he never disappoints. Tonight a The Queen in Wilmington, DE, he sang quite a few songs I wasn’t familiar with, but that only adds to the mystique of this incredible talent.
As an amateur guitar player who struggles to finger a Cmaj7 chord on a good day, when I see what Raul Midon does with a guitar is far beyond my wildest dreams. He switched between two acoustic guitars in his usual style of jazz, classical, flamingo, and whatever else you want to call it. The body of the guitar serves as a percussion instrument and his mouth trumpet will fool you if you’re not looking.
He is one of the most unique performers I’ve ever seen and I’ll see him again when he comes through the area. I suggest you do the same if you love good music.
So sorry I missed it!
Had the pleasure a sharing a week of his marvelous performances on the 2012 Dave Koz Jazz Cruise. One of the most memorable evenings was an after midnight jam with Raul and Friends in the ships Centurium.
The jam was scheduled for an hour, however, every time he said this is the last song, some musician would wander through an say I’ll join you for one more. Around 2:00 am, we thought it was finally over; as we were riding the elevator to our floor, we heard the music start up again. Patti Austin wander through and said “hold on for a minute…” Rather than go back down, we enjoyed from the 10th deck balcony — jam was finally over around 3:00 am… LOVED IT!
I’ve only seen Raul do the virtuoso thing. I’d love to see him perform with others. Unless you’re looking at him perform, it’s hard to imagine all that sound is coming from one person.
Aboard ship, he did several virtuoso sets in small venue settings; they were fantastic! I hope to see him perform again in the future…
