Widener University will present its inaugural Founders Day on Friday, April 8 as part of the university’s bicentennial celebration taking place during the 2021-22 academic year. Founders Day will be marked by multiple events happening on campus in Chester, Pa. that will draw students, alumni, faculty, staff, families and friends together in celebration.

The media is invited and encouraged to attend. Visually rich events are happening throughout the day. A full schedule is available at widener.edu/FoundersDay. Highlights include:

  • 10 – 10:30 a.m., flagpole at Old Main, “Continuing the Tradition: Passing of the flag.” A member of the Pennsylvania Military College class of 1971 will pass a guidon to a senior member of the Dauntless Battalion, Widener’s current ROTC program, in a tradition symbolizing the continuation and honor of the PMC. This will be followed by a wreath laying ceremony at 10:30 a.m. for the classes of 1970 and 1971, also at the flagpole.
  • 2-3 p.m., Memorial Field, ROTC military skills competition hosted by the Dauntless Battalion. This will feature current ROTC cadets assisting Pennsylvania Military College alumni as they proceed through the skills course that includes: 1.) clean the cannon 2.) throw the simulated grenade 3.) running with a bayonet and hitting it into an oversized hay barrel and 4.) searching for a mine, with a bayonet, in a barrel of sand.
  • 3:30 p.m., University Center atrium, PMC class of 1915 banner unveiling. This artifact is an important visual reminder of Widener’s centuries-old foundation and heritage.
  • 4-6:30 p.m. Pride-A-Palooza, Memorial Field, food trucks, beer garden, cake cutting, mini golf, inflatables, games, more.

Over the last two centuries, Widener University has evolved and adapted to the times and needs of its students. From its origins in 1821 as the Bullock School in Delaware to the embrace of military instruction and move to Chester, to today’s thriving, inclusive university of scholars, Widener has always been in the vanguard of cultivating tomorrow’s leaders. We invite the media to visit campus for Founders Day and report on the milestone of Widener reaching 200 years.
