“Hometown Hero” Champion: Dyana Williams

Dyana Williams is a beloved radio personality and a fierce advocate for many community issues. Dyana worked with music producers Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam on the Literacy Lyric Project, which highlighted the importance of good reading and writing skills for those pursuing a career in the entertainment industry.

She designs media strategies for music celebrities such as Rihanna and Janelle Monae and has met with U.S. presidents to champion National African-American Music Month (now celebrated in June).

She hosts Soulful Sunday on Radio One Philadelphia’s WRNB 100.3 FM and is a frequent commentator on TV One’s music series Unsung.

DCLC Student Champion: Kim Robinson

Kim Robinson came to the Literacy Council unsure if she was ready to study for her GED. A rare brain hemorrhage several years before had forced her to relearn everyday tasks such as walking and using the stove. Joining a classroom with other adults seemed scary and overwhelming to Kim. Nevertheless, she took the first step and enrolled.

Kim continued to battle and overcome obstacles as she earned her GED and went on to further schooling. Hear her inspiring journey at this year’s Champions of Adult Literacy: Quizzo for a Good Cause fundraiser on October 24, 2018.
