Chester Community Charter School is proud of its growing sports program which began with boys basketball and now includes girls basketball, baseball, softball and cheerleading. They celebrated their student athlete’s accomplishments with a fabulous banquet featuring two very exciting guest speakers who couldn’t have been more different but who shared the same message of the benefits of getting a good education, managing adversity, hard work, and not following the crowd.

Shep Garner, III is a very familiar face to many of us who watched him progress his basketball skills from the playgrounds of Chester to Biddy League, Katherine Drexel, Roman Catholic, all the way to becoming the leading 3-point shooter in Penn State’s history. Shep graduates with a degree in English in August and will be trying out for NBA teams before the June draft.

Fresh from a N.I.T. Championship

Shanette Lee has been an assistant coach with Villanova University woman’s basketball for 18 years. She grew up on the streets of Philadelphia learning to play with the boys before earning a scholarship to play at Villanova. Not only was she Rookie of the Year in the Big 5, she is Villanova’s all-time assist leader.

Nova’s woman’s basketball had a great season and made it to the 2nd round of this year’s NCAA tournament before losing to eventual champion Notre Dame. (We all know what the Villanova men did)

Congratulations to all the student athletes who were honored last night.

One of the many families attending the sports banquet. There was not an empty seat in the room.
