Mrs. Katharine M. Dockens was a descendant of the Rev. Richard Allen, founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in America. She taught for 37 years at Frederick Douglass Junior High School in Chester.

In her role as docent of Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church, Mrs. Dockens was a knowledgeable resource about the documents housed in its archives. When historians, researchers, and writers wanted information about the church’s history, they asked for her.
