Professor Newsman stands at a board and handwrites the population of Chester compared to Philadelphia and extrapolates how many murders would occur in Philadelphia if they happened at the same rate as Chester.
You can’t do that!
Murders in Chester occur all over the city (see map above). Only the Widener University campus and the riverfront have been spared and that’s because most of the riverfront is inaccessible. In contrast, murders in Philadelphia occur in pockets throughout the city. I’d venture to guess that at least 75% of Philadelphia’s footprint is exempt from multiple murders.
Chester is like a bad neighborhood in West, SW, or North Philly. These densely packed neighborhoods which house just as many people as Chester in half the space and have similar poverty statistics are what Fox News should be doing their comparisons to.
By telling millions of viewers that Chester’s 27 murders equates to 1,100 murders in Philadelphia is grossly misleading and helping to keep people, business, and opportunity away from Chester.
Chester has no resources to implement a reputation management retort when nonsense like this his the airwave, so I thought I’d help out a little.
